Glad To Be Grateful

A Note From Bill

Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner as I begin to write my article for this issue of the newsletter. Every year, I am reminded of the unbelievable sacrifice of those who gave their lives for our country. Although never perfect, I am extremely grateful to live in this country—it truly is the land of opportunity. In light of the timing, I’d like to share some of the things that I am personally grateful for.

​At the top of the list: my successful open-heart surgery and (relatively) smooth recovery. “Open-heart surgery” is something that I had only ever thought about in 

hypotheticals, and so now that I’ve been through it and come out the other side, all I can really feel is gratitude for my health, my doctors and, of course, my wife Kerry for getting me through recovery all while dealing with a new home build. Tied for first place, of course, are my children who have gone on to have children of their own. I love being a grandparent, and there really is nothing more fun than seeing a young child exploring the wonders of the universe.

I am also grateful for a long, rewarding career in architecture. As a firm owner, I have seen my fair share of highs and lows, but either way, totally rewarding. Architecture is more than a job for me; at Studio21 Architects, my team and I develop relationships with our clients, many of which have lasted for years. Working in this kind of architecture, directly with homeowners, gives me the opportunity to actually make a home work better for those that live there, which I think can make lives better too.

I have visited forty-nine of the fifty states, along with many foreign countries. It’s been a gift to be able to travel as much as I have. I live with gratitude beyond belief that a kid from the south side of Chicago had the opportunity to do all of this. And if you know me, you know I can’t forget to mention my passion for racing cars.. After 48 years of racing, I am still relatively competitive and enjoy the friendships that have developed after all those years. For that, I am grateful. I will even be racing at Road America for June Sprints soon!

​In closing, I am extremely grateful to be able to write my regular newsletter article, regardless of all the pressure and nagging to get it done on schedule, even though I never do! That’s what I call gratitude.
