Kitchen crimes!

A few issues ago, I declaimed the common bathroom design mistakes that frustrate me to no end. For the most part, these indefensible design choices were observed in rental homes that I’ve stayed at throughout my travels. I personally prefer the vacation rental over a hotel room and because of that, I am back once again on my soapbox to vocalize another common source of plain bad design: the kitchen.

In your average home, the most expensive room is undoubtedly the kitchen. The high price tag makes sense; aside from the handful of appliances that are necessary in any kitchen, this room also tends to be the focal point of a home, not only for entertaining, but also simply day-to-day life. We put a lot of thought into our client’s kitchen designs because the functionality of a kitchen comes with many, many considerations, but it is also very specific to the client. This is one of the reasons why we supply custom Woodharbor cabinets, and why custom cabinetry is an integral part of our Design + Build projects.

From the most glaring mistakes to the smallest slipups, kitchen design blunders are quite common. I’ve jotted down a few of the ones that rank highly in the “bothersome” category, as well as why these choices really should be avoided. Before I get started, however, I do want to make a quick caveat: noticing these kitchen catastrophes does have its positive effects, as it helps me create better kitchen
create better kitchen designs, and it makes me truly appreciate the attention to detail Studio21 Architects strives to provide!

One final bonus kitchen crime: no landing spaces next to the fridge—where will you put your groceries??

Until next time...
